Exhibition in Abano Terme: Mario Sironi, an Italian painter of the twentieth century

Abano Terme, Villa Bassi Museum, from September 16. 2022 to January 8. 2023

The aim of the exhibition is to explain the man, his social commitment, his critical sagacity, his perspicacity in political satire, a great illustrator and a great painter.

Mario Sironi (Sassari, 1885 – Milan 1961) was one of the most famous artists of the first half of the twentieth century.

During his career, Sironi has joined various artistic currents and has even founded one together with other artists, as in the case of the Italian Novecento movement.

Over the years Sironi has been a member of Futurism, the Italian avant-garde born in 1909 with the famous manifesto by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

After that, for a certain period it also underwent the influences of the Metaphysical current, founded in the 1920s by Giorgio de Chirico, and of expressionist painting.

Furthermore, Sironi moved to the fore to bring mural painting back to life, of which he became the most important exponent of his time.

In the exhibition you will have the unmissable opportunity to admire works that have not been visible to the public for several years.

In his works we will find stylistic references to the great movements that characterized the Italian and European painting of the twentieth century, from Abstractionism to Futurism, to arrive at the return to order and magical realism.

Through the three sections of the exhibition the artist's entire career is retraced, starting from a small oil dedicated to a landscape of 1900, a very young Sironi just fifteen, up to his latest works: the splendid Madonna and child of 1956, rich in light and hope, and the dramatic Composition of 1957-'59, which will close the exhibition in the Villa Bassi art gallery.

The more than 80 works fit into the museum's exhibition itinerary, returning to activate a dialogue that is renewed in each temporary exhibition between different eras and styles, between the master's canvases and the frescoes of Villa Bassi and the pieces of the permanent collection of the Museum.
